Hi, I just got a positive result yesterday evening. Think I'm almost 5 weeks... Had an ectopic in April and I'm very anxious. Thank God I found this website. Can I ask some advice? Do I just ring the Rotunda and explain that I'm pregnant after an ectopic? will they do blood tests and an early scan? At what stage will they do an early scan?
I can't tell you how grateful I was to find this site last night. It's so reassuring to talk to other people with the same feelings....
Hi there, welcome to the board and congratulations on the BFP!!! Ring the EPU directly and explain. Ask for a scan asap - just to see the pregnancy sac in the right place. They might or might not do bloods, but I always found them really good in there (the nurse in particular, she's so lovely!), so give them a call.
I rang Epu and was told earliest scan will be at 7 weeks + 2 days. I had my ectopic at 7 weeks..... I asked about getting an earlier scan but was old there's no point. I asked about blood tests and was told no, it wasn't routine unless I was showing signs of ectopic e.g. Pains on one side etc. So confused now, I was told To ring in if I ever got pregnant again.
I think I will ring the office of the consultant who did my surgery. 2 and a half weeks is a long time for me to wait, I'm worried sick already.
Hiya definitely speak to your consultant. 7 weeks is too late. I'm pregnant after IVF and they scanned me at 5 weeks to make sure it was in the right place (I'd had 3 ectopics!) and we saw a perfect pregnancy sac. That's all I needed at that stage. 2 weeks later I had another scan and we saw the hearbeat. Don't let them fob you off, there's plenty of girls here who had scans well before 7 weeks. After ectopics it's so important they scan you asap to make sure it's in the right place. Don't let your consultant put you off either. Be persistent and strong. Good luck x
I can't get through to my consultant. I tried epu again, girl was very nice but explained that they have protocol to follow i.e. Minimum 7 weeks!!!! She said she would leave a note for the doc on Monday and they would call me. My scan is booked for 7 weeks 1 day. I lost a tube just before 7 weeks so I feel this appointment could be too late. I'm starting to really worry that they don't understand that I'm trying make sure that I won't lose a tube again by leaving it too late.
I am going in on Monday morning to get beta hcg tested. I don't think I can do any more??? Just a waiting game now. x
Good for you for ringing the EPU again. This is what we are trying to change - their "protocol" of not doing scans before 7 weeks. For anyone with a history of ectopic, that's just not acceptable. Fortunately a few hospitals seem to be more willing to do scans earlier, but with others it's still a struggle. Hopefully the doc will call you back on Monday and agree to see you. Glad they are doing the beta hcg though - make sure they do it again 48 hours later, as only that will show if levels are rising as they should! In the meantime, try and relax. Most pregnancies after ectopics are normal, healthy pregnancies - just have a look at the amount of successful pregnancies we've had on this board! Chances are everything is fine, but of course it's a worry! Best of luck, try and chill out over the weekend and let us know how you get on! x
Thanks, Mod2. You spurred me on with your advice to "be persistent and be strong". Feel a lot better knowing I'm doing all I can..... Thanks again for being there, you have made a huge difference! Have a lovely weekend and I will keep you posted. x
Hi andiamo, welcome to the board and of course congratulations on your BFP! I'm fuming here reading about the protocol of not scanning before 7 weeks. I had 2 ep and was treated the same. You can of course go private to put your mind at ease. You can contact the Irish maternal fetal foundation (http://www.imff.ie/contact.cfm) which are based at the Beacon Hospital and get them to scan you next week. They'll do it no problem. I feel so angry about the attitude of the hospitals, but you are doing all you can. I remember clearly when I called the EPU on my second pregnancy, I was about 5 weeks after IVF and started bleeding a bit, the nurse said there was no point in me going in at all as they would have done nothing it was too soon. Well...I went to a different hospital and they did scan me. They couldn't see anything. I knew it was another ep. On my third pregnancy I got a scan at 5w1d and the sac was clearly visible. Here they tell you you can't see anything before 7 weeks. It's a lie. you will not be able to see a HB but you MUST see a sac in the uterus by about 5 weeks. that's all you need to see. Keep us posted and of course it's very likely all is well but both Mod2 and I completely understand the need to KNOW all is ok.
Hi, thanks so much for your response, it kept me going over the weekend. The latest is, went for bloods this morning and going again on wednesday. I have myself booked in for a trans vaginal scan with the consultant who did my laparoscopy for Wednesday week, I haven't decided if I'm going private or not yet but will get him to do the scan anyway. He is on hols, so that's the earliest I could get. I am happy enough with that. Just wanted to get it done before the 7 week mark. I didn't hear back from epu, although I had a missed call from private no, so it could have been them. the day just ran away on me, so I didn't get a chance to ring the imff, Im happy with seeing consultant next week, although I could change my mind when I get results from bloods. Thanks for giving me the info about it. I think that's all for now. I'm feeling a bit calmer now that I'm in the process of getting things checked. Thanks again Mod1 & Mod2. I really appreciate your help and support. x
Just after reading your posting and I agree completely its so hard. I rang Holles Street and told 6-8 weeks is the earliest which is ok if it was 6 but what about 7 or 8??? I ended up going to my consultant as well and getting a private scan as my nerves just couldnt cope with waiting for an appointment that could be between 6-8 weeks! and at 6 weeks today I saw everything sac, embryo and heartbeat It took a bit longer 7weeks on my first baby to see all that but Mod2 is so right you can see a lot before the 7 week mark.
Hope, thanks a million for your post. Like you I just can't wait, I'm too anxious. Will get transvaginal at 6.5 weeks privately. Epu rang me back today to confirm that they won't budge on the 7 week scan, too early to see anything blah blah. So infuriating. Got a bit frustrated and told that obviously if I want the care I'm looking for, I have to go private and pay for it. I explained that I had no other option. She then explained that trans vaginal is for emergencies only. going back for 2nd bloods tomorrow, so hopefully hcg levels will have doubled, which will be a little indicator that I'm going in the right direction....
Congrats to you on your pregnancy and such wonderful news today, it must have been a huge relief to know all is going well. I'm really happy for you, you can relax a little now and get a bit more excited. I know it's hard but at least you know it's not ectopic now.
I feel alot more relaxed, I know its early days but at least I wont have to deal with an ectopic ...
I had an early transvaginal scan on my first baby but again I paid for it so I really think its all about cost in the public hospitals.... Great to get the bloods done - I did that on my first baby and it was great reassurance..couldn't find anywhere this time that would do it..
Anyway very best of luck..I know its an anxious wait.
Just a quick update...... I got my 1 st bloods result. Hcg is 780, taken at 5 weeks + 1 day. I'm not sure if that good or bad but think important thing is that it needs to double. So won't know until I get results of 2nd bloods given this morning. hopefully will get them tomorrow or Friday at the latest. Oh my God, the waiting is excruciating - I'm a nervous wreck, I know I shouldn't be, but can't help it. I could cry at any minute I feel so emotional, this is so hard....
